Setting Boundaries at Work

Constant #connectivity makes it hard to turn off work and keep a good balance between work and life. Here are some #strategies for establishing and upholding personal and professional boundaries.

1) Think about your limits, how far they go, and the best way to set them before you say anything. Your personal #boundaries will be based on your values and what you think is most important in life.
2) Share your #beliefs and #priorities with others once you’ve established them. The easiest way to achieve this is to just stop responding to emails after 7 p.m.
3) #Structure at work is crucial. You’re in charge of setting and keeping your own limits, so make sure they’re strong.
4) Maintain a businesslike demeanor in all of your interactions.
5) Establishing standards for the tasks you will complete, those you have been hired to complete, those you are willing to take on as part of being a “team player,” and those that are not your responsibility. Work that isn’t your responsibility gives you the chance to either turn it down or give it to someone who is better at it.
6) Sometimes, your predetermined limits will make #delegation unnecessary. These are the times when you can simply say “no,” a word that many of us find difficult to utter.

However, it is much more difficult to actually say “no” in a professional setting than it seems.

7. Using #vacation time as it is provided, when it is needed, and when you are able to. It’s hardly a badge of honor to let vacation days pile up and then expire.

8) Let #technology serve as a tool for establishing #limits.
